Siena and Gargonza's castle

Crete Senesi, round hills, small villages and wonderful castles

From the historical city center of Siena, with its characteristic towers and its precious cathedral, we will head south-east into the hilly countryside, which will slowly look more and more similar to a moonscape: this is the area of Crete Senesi.

The Crete Senesi is a unique landscape with almost no vegetation. It is made up of suggestive natural formations: calanchi (nooks eroded by the rain) and biancane (light grey hills).

The cultivation of cereals and sunflowers will surprise us with the variety of green tones and the abundance of red poppies. Biking on the hills we see beautiful old villas at the end of long cypress boulevards.

We cross the Crete Senesi and pass Rapolano, which is famous for its thermal baths and marble pits. Than the tuscan landscapes will be characterized by vineyards and fruit and olive trees. There we find the Modanella castle surrounded by its small old village and neat cultivations of olives and vines. Biking through quiet and relaxing woods, we reach Gargonza castle and its medieval village. We will stay a night in one of those houses, in peace and solitude.

Back on track with direction Siena we will be surprised again by the sight of brick villas. Biking up and down we reach the well-known area of Chianti Senese where the famous tuscan vineyards surround us. We will go past the Castle of Quattro Mura and finally see Siena in the distance: its towers, steeples and dome-shaped roofs.

We will go back home with so much of this beauty still in our eyes: landscapes, art and colors.
