Apulia and Matera
Sassi of Matera and Trulli: biking among typical architectures and green inland landscapes
Dates upon request
The tour starts off by the sea, develops in the inland, in the marvelous Apulian countryside with olive and almond trees, gardens and beautiful typical houses, and finishes by the sea again.
The first romantic church we visit is the cathedral of Trani. We can enjoy it closely from the windows of our hotel, a beautiful palace of the 18th century. Than we will visit some spectacular castles built by Federico II during the Holy Roman Empire, first of all Castel del Monte, UNESCO World Heritage Site that we reach after a smooth climb.
We cross the undulating landscape and arrive in Murgia. After the karst plateau that lais between Apulia and Basilicata, we stop by at Ruvo di Puglia and we visit Altamura, that is known because of the typical bread and the cathedral. Only later, finally, we arrive to the city in the stone: Matera. A lot of the Sassi, the old homes dug in the chalky stone, have been now restaurated and inhabited. We visit the park of the old rocky churches, a lot of them have lovely frescos inside, and we walk some old paths.
Among the visits, one is very special: the Cripta del Peccato Originale (the crypt of the original sin), which is out in the countryside and we will zigzag to reach it.
Left the charming Matera behind, we enter in Itria Valley among the Trulli (typical and special stone home with a conical roof). We will visit some of them and see them around us while we bike, sometimes grouped in villages, as the unique Alberobello. From the green countryside we lead again towards the coast. Following roads among fields and finally a road on the ridge of a hill, we reach Ostumi, the white city, above the sea.
From Ostumi we go slowly downhill, cross ancient olive trees fields and finally touch the sea, along the coast, that alternates low cliffs and sand narrow bays. The bike day finishes in Monopoli, one of the most beautiful towns of the area.
UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Matera: Sassi and the park of the rocky churches; Castel del Monte; Alberobello: Trulli.
The most beautiful Italian villages: Cisternino - Locorotondo
Orange flag: Cisternino - Alberobello
Blue flag beaches 2016: Ostuni
