The Long Dolomites Way

Going down along the bike path Cortina-Calalzo and the Alemagna road

This is an amusing and relaxing route, which goes mostly downhill and on bike path, surrounded by the superb landscape of the Dolomites. It starts off by the Misurina Lake and arrives in Belluno.

From Belluno we will shortly travel by bus to Misurina, from where, after a lovely tour around the lake, we will then start going downhill. After some nice hairpin turns till Carbonin, we enter the Long Dolomites Way that follows the old railway track from Calalzo to Cortina revalued as a beautiful cycling path. The first short stretch will be uphill, but then we will go down and down from Cimabanche to Calalzo. The first part is slightly uphill, but then it’s all down from Cimabanche to Calalzo. The higher part of the bike path is in the area of the natural park of the Ampezzo Dolomites and is a well-travelled dirt road surrounded by forests.

The town of Cortina d’Ampezzo, the pearl of the Dolomites, lies in the large alpine valley of Boite and is the first city we go through. It is surrounded by the marvelous Dolomites of Cadore. We will often stop along the way and look and appreciate them: Tofane, Pomagognon, Cristallo, Faloria, Sorapiss, Becco di Mezzodì, Croda da Lago and Cinque Torri. Later we will go past the well-known hamlet of San Vito di Cadore, where we’ll stop for the night. Pieve, is just some miles away from Calalzo where the old railway and the ney bike path end.

Left behind the beautiful bike path, the route tracks another fascinating path: the old highway 51 of Alemagna, which has been a very important arterial street between the Po valley and the German speaking countries (this is the reason of such a name: Alemagna, the old way to say Germany). This road used to start off in Conegliano and arrive to Dobbiaco, and dates back to the Roman time. In 1830 the archduke Ranieri of Austria renovated it as it is to be seen now. The SS51 goes through Longarone to the Cadore area, where it has lost its importance because it has been replaced by a wider and faster road with 4 tunnels. Biking on this road is now very quiet and you can enjoy the surroundings: a narrow valley which becomes wider and wider.

From here in the distance we can see the still disturbing Vajont dam. We will then leave it behind us, and keep on biking along the green water of Piave River: we track the river throughout the whole valley, in Belluno we will leave it goodbye.
