Bled Lake and the Alpe Adria Cycling Route
Gorgeous towns, crystal clear waters and blossoming meadows, between Italy and Slovenia
An original itinerary characterised by three themes: crystal clear water; the Alps with their forests and grazing; old railways now turned into Greenways.
This itinerary develops mainly on old railways that today are cycling paths and connect Italy, Austria and Slovenia. The Alpe Adria Cycling Route starts from Tarvisio and ends in Resiutta. This trail allows us to admire the river Fella while pedaling on high viaducts, bridges and protected routes. We will also ride on an old railway from Tarvisio to Kraniska Gora along the Sava Valley. Old trains will be part of our trip as we travel, as passangers, on the Ferrovia Transalpina from Bled to Kanal. This train tracks built at the beniginning of the IX century by the Austro Ungarian Empire were an authentic cutting-edge work of engeneering with its audacious bridges, viaducts, tunnels. Trains still run on those tracks passing through little mountain villages. They connect Iesenice to Nova Gorica, and used to reach Trieste.
Majestic mountains surround wide valleys, forests and grazing fields are the landscape that mark this inspiring itinerary. We will get a closer look to the Alpe Giulia, ending part of the Dolomites. We will cross the borders from italy to Slovenia, a land of cultural mix. Once in Slovenia we will reach the National Park of Triglav to cherish the view of Bled Lake, beautiful small pearl surrounded by high mountains.
Water is the last of our three themes. The rivers Fella and Tagliamento flow noisily and many little streams gurgle joining us on our way. The Isonzo River is incledible for its emerald water and the Natisone River has incredibly blue nuances. The gorges of Vintgar add a unique flavour to our tour: a rocky canyon where the Radovna River flows creating whirls and falls. Thanks to a wooden path we are able to walk right in the middle of the canyon surrounded by lush green nature.
We will not leave aside art and history, of course. We will visit Villa Manin in Codroipo and pass through Venzone, with its typical white stone buildings, completely rebuilt after the 1976 earthquake; Cividale di Friuli, cradle of the Longobard Reign; Spilimbergo with its facades full of frescos and its world wide known school of Mosaic; all of those little tows are authentic architectural jewels to be discovered.
