Dresden – Berlin
Following the River Elbe among history and nature
From Decin to the Saxon Switzerland, then tracking the sinuous Elba river to Dresden, Meissen, Torgau and WIttenberg. From there along the R1 bike path, to Potsdam and finally Berlin.
The tour starts off in Decin in Czech Republic, where the Elbe River beautifully flows through a narrow valley surrounded by forests and chalk rocks. In few kilometers we reach the area of Saxony, in the German territory, where the hills’ edges have strange and interesting forms, and castles stand up on the ridges.
The area is called Saxony’s Switzerland, and is protected as national park. Pedaling on the flat bike path we reach the lovely Dresden, whose bell towers and domes come into sight.
We are following the Elbe bike trail, very loved by the Germans. Along the banks of the river we visit different interesting towns: Meissen, the city of the porcelain, with the castle on the top of the hill; Belgern, small village supervised by the big statue of Roland and Torgau, with a beautiful castle and impossible stairs, mostly known for having been the meeting point of the Allies, Russians and Americans, at the end of the Second World War. Once we arrive in Lutherstadt Wittenberg, Luther’s city, we sadly leave the Elbe River behind us and go direction a more ambitious goal: Berlin.
On the R1 European bike path we head towards Potsdam, with the marvelous 18th century Sanssouci Castle (from French: with no thoughts). We will visit its most important building and the gorgeous park, with fountains and statues. Many lakes surround Potsdam, and it wasn’t by chance that the Prussian kings chose it as their countryside home.
Before reaching the big city, the tour goes only through very relaxing landscapes. We will bike throughout tiny villages, but we will be mostly just pedaling through the countryside and forests. Rivers and lakes: a lot of water will be around us all the time.
The arrival in Berlin is unforgettable: a large bike path leads us from the woods directly to the Tiergarten city park and the Brandenburg gate, symbol of the city, place full with history and stories. One whole day will be then dedicated to the visit of the city by bike. We will be able to see many of the important monuments and places of Berlin. For a more exhaustive visit, it is possible to stay in Berlin longer, or add one dream more to our secret wishes.
