Po Delta

Biking along the meanders of the big Po River until the Pomposa Abbey

Dates upon request

We call Po Delta that area included between the outlet of the River Adige north and the Valleys of Comacchio south. Its modern shape is mainly due to the massive drainage system built by the Venetian Republic in 1604. In that period, in fact, the so called Taglio di Porto Viro was constructed deviating the main stream of the river. The aim of these works was to avoid the rivers massive amount of sediments filling in the port which was of vital importance for the life of the people of Venice. During the first years of the 19th century the water pump of Cá Vendramin was also built but this area has nevertheless been flooded many times. One of the most terrible was the 1951 merciless flood which caused more that 100 deaths and leaving 180 people homeless. The Cá Vendramin water pump was then a technological jewel and has today turned into a museum. Last floods happened in the 60s’ and put an end to the gas extractions that were carried out in that area which had caused the collapsing of the river banks and of the land. The following reclamation gave back hope and life to this area and economy started again. Up to today the River Po hasn’t over flown its banks.

What we find today, in our bike trips, it’s a nice and peaceful environment; land is cultivated with rice and other cultivations, tall poplars trees cut the perfect shape of the fields.

Our holiday starts at Cá Zen, a beautiful 17th century Villa with its estate. From here we’ll depart riding along the Goro Po, we’ll go through the dwelling of Mesola and close to Torre Abate, old sewerage that today is a natural oasis. After all this we’ll reach the Abbey of Pomposa: founded in year 1000 a.c. it’s still very inspiring for its beauty. Our day finishes with an excellent fish dinner in the Cannevié Oasis. This place, today a lodging, used to be a fishing station with its lords’ residence.

We’ll go through the Mesola Wood to get to Goro. We’ll cross two boat bridges to reach the island of Ariano and the Island of Donzella going along the Sacca of Scardovari. Once countryside it is now an empty lagoon were muscles are grown. Once in Porto Tolle we’ll cross the Po of Venice on a ferry boat. This is the largest branch of the River. After the ferry we’ll continue our tour heading towards Porto Levante; we’ll ride on the Valleys Road between sea and land to reach Boccasette where we’ll get a boat to discover the Po of Maistra. This natural excursion is not to be missed: we’ll see the most hidden sides of the canals, go through the rushes and take a look to those birds that have here found their perfect habitat. Many pink flamingos dwell here. We’ll get back to the island of Ariano and, after exploring the large area of the Po Delta but before returning to Cá Zen, we’ll go and visit the water pump of Cá Vendramin, now museum of the drainage system and important witness of the history of this area.
