Bohemia and Moravia
Czech Republic: among castles and wonderful towns
A long part of the tour tracks the Prague-Vienna Greenway, which runs through the Southern Bohemia close to the Austrian borderline from Mikulov to Jindrichuv Hradec. We add some variations to this trail and undertake other bike itineraries, to visit among others the lovely cities of Telc and Cesky Krumlov, UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The environment is a relaxing undulating countryside, with torrents, woods, romantic flowering gardens, city centers, castle and abbeys of undiminished beauty.
The tour starts off in Mikulov, lovely little city situated in the Plava flat region dominated by its large castle. We head then to Znojmo, old royal city with important buildings and Roman marks. Afterwards we will bike to the fabulous castle of Vranov nad Dyji, which colors are pastel, and than through the cultivated countryside to the Austrian border, where the military barracks of the Cold War are still to be seen.
In Slavonice we can admire the square with buildings of the Renaissance, all decorated with frescos and graffiti. Telc’s square is maybe even more beautiful and unique: the fronts of the houses and the arcades underneath are all patterned with different colors and drawings.
Telc is surrounded by lakes and parks and protected by old walls. After the marvelous square, the gothic castle is a noteworthy city monument. We will than reach Jindrichuv Hradec, with a lovely castle, which was one of the most important towns in Bohemia during the Middle Age. Suddently Carvenha Llota (the red castle) appears in a romantic scenario. The next landscape is the large natural reserve of Trebonsko, rich in lakes and ponds. Also the town of Trebon faces a lake and we stop a night and take the time to visit its maintained old center and Renaissance castle, with the green park all around its bastions.
Our last stop of the tour is the beautiful medieval city of Cesky Krumlov. Its castle (the second biggest castle of Czech Republic after the one in Prague) and its thick colorful tower stand over the city between the hills and the river.
