Alsace, Freiburg and Basel

A round tour along the Rhine valley among canals and vineyards

This is an easy path that touches three nations: Germany, France and Switzerland. This is an area where the inhabitants feel to be a little German and a little French, their cultures influence each other and their history is common. Basel is said to be the corner of the three countries, and Strasbourg, open cosmopolitan city, has been a crossroad of the continental Europe and more recently has been chosen as base of the European Parliament.

The wide Rhine basin is the common geographic element of this vast area. It crosses Basel and Strasbourg. We bike on its side during only one day, but the topic of the water interests us longer: we will follow the relaxing course of old and new channels.

Beyond the fluvial landscape, the vineyards are another element that we find along all the way. The smooth hills of the southern Alsace and the Breisgau area all around Freiburg of Breisgau are places where the sun so often shines and it is possible to grow fine wines.

The villages of Hunawihr, Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé are beautifully set on the hills between the towns of Colmar and Sélestat. We will bike some up and downs to visit them.

Our trail touches the four most important cities in the area: Basel, Colmar, Strasburg and Freiburg, which are welcoming cities with rich cultural life and interesting museums. We visit their lovely old centers and their Roman-Gothic cathedrals with sandstone bricks, which color is warm-yellow or dark red. In Alsace we can admire the unique medieval houses, which are painted pastel colors and give the landscape the look of a fairytale.

Above us, long white storks fly. The tip of their wings is black. Sometimes they halt on a field and walk with majestic moves. It is always nice to stop for a moment and look at them. The stork is the symbol of Alsace, and a lot of roofs, chimneypots and factory chimneys have big nests to host the long birds.
